Hi,

New to group.

I have a nine month old boxer and currently feeding it Iams puppy (large
breed formula). I have been hearing that Iams isn't what it used to be.

Are there any recommendations for another brand of food?

Thanks in advance

Ron

The important thing is to read and understand the ingredients label.
Here are Iams' ingredients:

Iams Puppy & Junior Large Rich in Chicken: Chicken (>20%), maize,
wheat, sorghum, animal fat, fish meal, barley, poultry meal, dried
beet pulp, chicken digest, dried whole egg, brewer's dried yeast,
sodium chloride, potassium chloride, DLmethionine, glucosamine HCl.

This is a good ingredient list, and better than most of its
competitors. Note the inclusion of wheat, which some say is bad for
dogs. But Iams says very few dogs are intolerant of it.

Hi,

I wouldn't consider this a good ingredients list. There are several
things wrong with it to my mind, but here are three relatively
uncontroversial points. The second, third and fourth ingredients listed
are all grains, which gives a high overall grain content (nothing wrong
with grains in moderation, but I wouldn't call this moderation); the
generic "animal fat" is definitely something to steer clear of (if
decent quality animal fat is available at all, it is called chicken fat
/ beef fat / etc., not undefinable "animal" fat); and the fact that the
manufacturer has felt it necessary to add at least one artificial amino
acid (DL-methionine) shows that the raw ingredients alone do not deliver
adequate protein quality.

I agree totally, though, that it's important to read and understand
ingredients lists -- here's a website that offers some help in this
direction. http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html

All the best,
Sally
