Well it should be noted that places like home depot and the like stock sub
standard sized pieces. You can special order the right stuff but the stuff
they have in stock isn't the size a fence contractor should use. For a six
foot high fence the top rail may be 1 3/8 or 1 5/8 get either the 21 foot
pieces with fit together or the 24 foot pieces which use a fitting, try
and avoid the little pieces ten feet long specified in the article. The
corner posts should be 2 3/8 and line posts 1 7/8 not the smaller stuff in
stock I think if your order them they are something like 8'8" which is what
you need to burry the right amount. Eight feet long is insufficient for the
corner posts and gate posts which also should be 2 3/8 you could use an
eight foot line post I suppose pulling it up a bit in the concrete has been
suggested, meaning deeper hole. The little aluminum wires of the proper
diameter can be ordered as well as the ones in stock are sub standard.
Generally the line posts are spaced at 10 feet not the dimension stated in
the article. the fabric or chain link also is sub standard at home depot or
lowes at least all the ones around here. There are real fence outlets but
may not be that easy to deal with and may well not cost much more installed
than buying the stuff yourself if you can get a good price from the fence
contractor and can't get a good price on the pieces. Another thing you will
discover in a bunch of instances is the frost heaves the posts as the
winters go by. Especially if your area has some wetter spots. One other
thing to mention is that if you order the fabric I highly recommend getting
the knuckle knuckle fabric which doesn't have any prongs. This is a dog
newsgroup and the dog's nose should be considered, when digging for that
squirrel they don't think about the blood and pain. Do not forget that the
fencing might heave up a couple of inches a year if you are real wet and in
the climate this poster is in. If you leave the concrete down a few inches
in the holes then one can cut the tops of the posts and drop the fence
somewhat easily at least at the beginning.
